When are auditions?
We generally hold two auditions at the start of the school year, usually falling around the second week of September. We also hold two auditions a few weeks into second semester. Audition dates and times are located in the "news" section, on the Daily Jolt and/or postered on bulletin boards throughout campus. Remember, auditions are only open to male AU undergrads or grads.
Do I need previous singing experience to get in?
No! In fact, some of our best singers have never sung in any conventional setting (chorus, band, etc.).
How much time does being in OASN take up?
We won't lie. Being in OASN takes up a significant amount of time. We rehearse at least 3 times a week, for 2 hours at a time. On top of that, we usually gig at least twice a month, here at AU or at other relatively nearby locales. Rehearsals and gigs ARE planned to accomodate as much of the group's individual schedules as possible. Like any other AU students, we too have busy schedules!
Can I be in DPA performances and OASN at the same time?
Sure! We've had members do it before. You'll just need to carefully juggle your schedule.
What should I prepare for my audition?
Just prepare for us a song that best shows off your voice. This can be any song, really. We've had people in the group try out with songs as common as "Happy Birthday" or The Star-Spangled Banner. Since auditions usually run on the long side, we ask that you limit your selection to a verse and a chorus.
Is there time for me to beatbox/do vocal percussion during my audition?
Sure. We focus on how well you sing during auditions first, but if you want to do some vocal percussion afterwards, it certainly doesn't hurt.
How many spots from last year's graduating class are you looking to fill?
We never go into a semester looking for a specific number of guys. If you're good enough to get in, you're good enough to get in.
Is it true that it's harder to get in mid-year than it is at the beginning of the year?
Not necessarily. It may appear that way just because the majority of guys who try out do so at the start of the year and thus, the mid-year pool of singers is usually much thinner comparatively. But, we're always looking for guys, so there is no decreased chance of getting in just because it is mid-year auditions.
If I don't get in my first time, can I try out again? And is there a limit to how many times that I can try out?
Absolutely. We encourage guys to come out and try again. We've accepted guys before who didn't make the group the first time around. And no, there is no limit on how many times you can try out.
